Lin Tourei (Lin Dong-Ling), Sunset (1930), from the catalogue of the 4th Taiten (Taiwan Art Exhibition).
This work by Lin Tourei was selected into the Japanese-style Painting Division at the 4th Taiten (Taiwan Art Exhibition) in 1930. The artist became friends with Lin Yu-Shan (林玉山, 1907-2003) in Chiayi in 1921, and afterwards studied painting with Chinese ink painter Pan Chun-Yuan (潘春源, 1891-1972) in Tainan for three years. In 1928, Lin Yu-Shan established the Chun-Meng Painting Society (春萌畫會), and Lin Tourei was also one of the founding members. In Taiwan Nichi Nichi Shinpo (Taiwan Daily News), there was a record stating “Sunset by Lin Tourei (Chiayi),” so the painting supposedly delineates the landscape of Chiayi. The entire painting is composed of refined and well-executed lines, displaying a style of fine brush ink painting. Although the scale of the objects in the painting is adjusted, both the foreground and background reveal vivid layers and produce an ideal effect of perspective. Depicting ducks in the river and an elder leading an ox, the overall image demonstrate pastoral simpleness and nature’s beauty.
