Space And Time In Tseng Pei-yao’s Art World And Selected Archives
The“Painting History of Tseng Pei-Yao” comprises personal materials archived into separate volumes. It is very likely that the first volume – “The Painting History of Tseng Pei- Yao, Vol. 1,” was compiled in 1958, and included his artistic activities from 1954 to 1958.
This time, with a grant from the Ministry of Culture, National Cheng Kung University’s Taiwan Art History Research Center (國立成功大學臺灣藝術史料研究中心) has partnered up with the Taiwan Visual Art Archive(TVAA) (臺灣藝術田野工作站) to form a research team to compile and publish a monograph featuring a selection of Tseng Pei-Yao’s archive. During the research period, the team was very fortunate to have unearthed and identified numerous important works and documents with art historical significance, giving the world a better chance to more comprehensively re-learn and re- interpret what we were not able to know about Tseng and other artists of his time in the past.
More precisely speaking, the “Painting History” which Tseng dedicated almost his entire adult life to compile does not revolve around “painting” (artworks), but primarily focuses on painting-related activities. Among all the literature in his estate, “Painting History” serves as a general guideline. One can even say that it is a life history that epitomizes the history of art movements. The central content comprises his solo exhibitions and his participation in group exhibitions in Taiwan and abroad, along with other relevant activities – in other words, it is practically the fundamental material for his “exhibition history”.
