In 1969, NMH printed its first Chinese and English catalogue, while also including conditions for “the style and state of the work” in its brief for the 10th Bienal de São Paulo:
1. Modern works in New Painting style.
2. As an exhibitor to be original and rich in intellect.
3. Represent the characteristics of the nation, with strong spirit, encourage and motivate viewers, calm with noble aspirations.
4. Adaptable to international ideologies, and even lead international systems of ideas.
The cause for these four conditions originated from the fact that NMH had inquired on award guidelines with the Embassy in Brazil but to no avail, and sent Yu Huansu abroad to observe for the first time. Under the suggestion of Yu, the sizes for oil paintings were greatly relaxed, and only paintings above size 100 (162 x 130 cm) were to be “combined and installed,” with scroll lengths no more than 180 cm, and width limited to 4 meters. “Composites” were a new invention for this year’s selection system, referring to works in which frames exceed regulations and must therefore be combined in sections of two or more, in the style of Chinese painting, with no hard frames used. Combining multiple panels (“composite installation”) into a painting, 2 to 3 meters in length, became a feature of works exhibited at the 10th Bienal de São Paulo.
