In May of 1956, in response to the invitation of São Paulo Museum of Modern Art, the Federal Government of Brazil invited our country to participate in the 4th Bienal de São Paulo in 1957. The ambassador in Brazil telegrammed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in sending quality works to the Bienal for cultural publicity. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs would then forward the telegram to the Ministry of Education, with the Minister instructing NMH in charge of its execution.
In the absence of experience, the museum had to find out the floor plan of its Brazilian venue, the size of its shipping container in order to stipulate the size of the works. Therefore without any clear guidance, the structural organization, conditions, and selected styles of the works were based on works from Fine Arts department professors and students.
For Taiwan’s first participation in the Bienal de São Paulo, aside from two-thirds of specially appointed works by the jurors, of the 28 works featured in the exhibition, main elements from painting circles at the time were included, as in the oil painting In the Temple from Yang Chi-tong, Fish from Chang Yi-shiung, sculptures Nude from Chen Hsia-yu andRising Up to the Height by Yang Yuyu, with woodwork emphasizing “combat” and “anti-communism, restore the nation” sentiments.
Taiwan was granted Honorable Mention for Hsiao Ming-hsien’s Composite in this edition.
