The subject of the painting, the Kuan Ti Temple, is now the God Of War Temple in Tainan, and the view is the alleyway between the buildings across the temple and the temple\u2019s \u201cSan Chuan Gate.\u201d The distinctive perspective creates a sense of depth in the image, indicating the ideas of \u201cpainting from life\u201d and Western perspective emphasized by the Taiten. There is vivid shadow cast by the temple at the intersection of the buildings. The architectural volume produced by \u201ccolor planes\u201d and the everyday scene under the searing sun are painting vocabularies informed by pleinairism. Another reference point regarding the context of the location is that the temple was also where activities of the Taiwan Cultural Association (\u81fa\u7063\u6587\u5316\u5354\u6703) often took place. In 1929, Tsai Pei-Huo (\u8521\u57f9\u706b), a predecessor of Ko Po-Chuan, organized the \u201cPe\u030dh-\u014de-j\u012b [Church Romanization] Research Society\u201d (\u767d\u8a71\u5b57\u7814\u7a76\u6703) at the temple. After the split of the Taiwan Cultural Association, the Taiwanese People\u2019s Party (\u6c11\u773e\u9ee8) moved the talks and newspaper reading club previously organized by the association to the temple\u2019s Buddha Hall. The Taiwanese Labor Unions (\u81fa\u7063\u5de5\u53cb\u7e3d\u806f\u76df) had organized speeches at the location. He went to Japan to study painting in 1925, and was accepted into the Western-style Painting Department at Tokyo Fine Arts School in 1928, where he studied under Okada Sabur\u014dsuke (\u5ca1\u7530\u4e09\u90ce\u52a9, 1869-1939). From 1929 to 1930, Kuo\u2019s works were selected for the 1st, 3rd, and 4th Taiten, among which Alley in Front of Kuan Ti Temple (\u95dc\u5e1d\u5edf\u524d\u7684\u5c0f\u5df7, depicting the God of War Temple today) featured Tainan\u2019s local scenery. Kuo had only participated in the Taiten three times. The reason might be that he had deliberately kept a distance from the public system during the period of Japanese rule. He adamantly refused to \u201cteach the Japanese language, collect rations from the Japanese government, and paint propagandist pictures.\u201d He also refused to join the \u201cTai-Yang Art Exhibition\u201d (\u81fa\u967d\u5c55), which showed his idiosyncrasy. In 1938, Kuo moved to Beijing and accepted an offer to teach at Beiping Art School (\u570b\u7acb\u5317\u5e73\u85dd\u5c08) and Beiping Normal University (\u5317\u5e73\u5e2b\u7bc4\u5927\u5b78). During this period, he also became friends with the important Japanese painter Umehara Ryuzaburo (\u6885\u539f\u9f8d\u4e09\u90ce, 1888-1986) and painted in various locations in Beijing. This experience had helped shape his painting style. From 1943 to 1946, he completed multiple large-scale paintings on Xuan paper. After World War II, he moved back to Taiwan, and began teaching at the Department of Architecture at National Cheng Kung University. He had a strong feeling about Tainan and Kaohsiung being criticized as an art desert due to a lack of cultural and artistic events. So, Kuo founded the \u201cTainan Fine Arts Association\u201d (\u81fa\u5357\u7f8e\u8853\u7814\u7a76\u6703) to promote art and served as its chairperson for over two decades.
